San Francisco, CA - South Africa-based Nkulee Dube delighted Californians in Santa Cruz, San Francisco and Berkeley during July, on what was her first U.S. tour. She was ably supported by her own wonderful band. Many who came to see the 26-year-old singer/songwriter were curious about the great Lucky Dube’s daughter. She did not disappoint.

Nkulee possess a strong voice with a natural beautiful melodic tone. She has managed to fuse ethno-soul and jazz with ethno-ragga in a true African stylee. She’s charismatic and joyous, with a command of the stage far beyond her age and experience. Like her father, Nkulee danced with members of the band. But, unlike Lucky, she also invited the audience on stage to show off their own moves.
Most of the songs she performed were originals, including these two that you can watch on YouTube right now - “Give it to Me” and “Who Dem.” She also paid tribute to her legendary father at each show, crafting his songs to her own style, including some rap-like chanting. “Feel Irie” had the audience singing along, arms waving, totally in the spirit. And, to take the inspiration back even further, she delivered a great version of Peter Tosh’s “Legalize It.”

At the Berkeley show, manager Mark Miller came on stage at midnight and initiated the singing of Happy Birthday to Nkulee. She was clearly moved, and became even more tearful when her talented backup singers sang to her during their solos. It was fitting that her encore was Lucky’s “Ding Ding Licky Licky Bong”: “Tears can not bring you joy / But joy can bring you tears / Even though I cry today / I will not hide it It’s for a different reason / Joy.”

We look forward to watching as Nkulee’s career takes off like a rocket! Even without a famous father, she deserves it. She’s that good.

One Love Hi Pawa is one of the most popular sound systems in the world and was the first reggae sound system ever born in Italy. After many years it’s still the number one sound. Rome based, these selectors have been working together since the eighties hosting radio shows, dancehalls and promoting concerts with international artists. In 1992 they produced a demo tape that sold more than 5.000 copies. They had still a dream. To build their own set, following the Jamaican tradition. After years of hard work, their dream became reality. One Love Sound toured continually all over Italy and soon became an international sound, touring all over Europe. One Love is one of the few European sounds to have performed where it all started, in Kingston, Jamaica. Everybody in Rome knows that Thursday is “Reggae Night”, its “One Love Night”. Thousands of people have been attending attended One Love’s Thursdays, for the past 20 years! One Love Hi Pawa has performed three consecutive times at Fully Loaded in Jamaica (2002, 2003, 2004) and one in 2008 at Fully Loaded in Miami in 2003, at UK Cup 2004 and 2005 in London, at Riddim Clash 2004 in Germany, at World Clash 2003 and 2004 in New York, and at World clash Canada 2005 in Toronto. ADMIRAL & JAHSEED have been DJ'ing together since 1997. Playing Dancehall Reggae music aka Ragga. Admiral DJ's the tunes (Selector) and Jah Seed chats the mike (MC) Admiral grew up in London in a SA exile family and got involved with reggae music through the Jamaican community, he was involved with a number of reggae sound systems in the UK. Jah Seed got involved with reggae growing up on the Zimbabwean club scene. The two met on Admiral's reggae show at the Voice Of Soweto radio station in 1996. At that time JahSeed was known in SA as 'Appleseed'.

In 1997 they started playing Thursday nights at the famous Tandoor club in Yeoville, Jo'burg. They have played to packed crowds every week since and have just finished a 6-year residency at the Horror Cafe in Newtown Jhb. Their night has become a bone fide Jo'burg legend over the years. Together with their sound system crew they are known as African Storm and have played extensively in SA and neighboring countries. JahSeed is the 'ragga voice' member of the multi-platinum selling Afro-Pop group Bongomaffin. As such he's won numerous awards, including SAMA's and KORA's, and traveled to many countries across the globe performing with some of the worlds biggest artists.

A TRIBUTE TO SMOKING BRASS- A CAPE TOWN REGGAE BAND

A Tribute to Cape Town Reggae Band Smoking Brass

Rising from the Ashes of “the system” …Smoking Brass arrived like a cool breeze on a hot summer’s day. Formed back in 1985 they put there first gig together on the 1st January 1986 at the Mix in Shortmarket street in Cape Town.Fronted by Dave Bongers(RIP) the band produced a true South African Reggae sound combining rootsy vibes and heavy bass lines united with multiple harmonies all packed with powerful punchy brass . Their music was fresh and although it was heavily influenced by Reggae it also contained subtle local influences of Kwela and an undertone of skanking ska. Preferring to move around to various gigs(In Cape Town) you could always be sure that they would provide you with a positive stage presence and their high-energy approach ensured an unforgettable experience.Gigs like early Brass Bell and onto The Base(Home of many local reggae outfits) to spots like the Pink Hall ,The Jive and T-zers( No not the strip joint). David Bongers, a wonderfully gifted artist and whose talent was never fully appreciated provided smoky smooth vocals which combined seamlessly with the 3 Piece Brass section and a omnipresent Reggae Offbeat upstrum.

Songs such as Ten Miles and I Don’t Need to fight are classic Reggae songs and showcased the bands ability to launch there Brass section so that one was left with a feeling that you had just been “scudded”. Fastlane and Sheepskin showed that the band was comfortable to cross over to Ska mainly due to the fact that the Brass section was just so good…Ian Florence on tenor trombone packed a mighty punch and added the extra dimension to the brassy sounds a classic deep feeling. Louis Raubenheimer on alto sax provided the perfect silky roots melodies. Dave Cave(he of the marvellous upstrum sound) and Ake’s Swartz provided the soul with rhythm and bass guitar and Craig Angilley on drums rounded off the classic offbeat roots sounds. Smoking Brass had an ability which few other bands of this genre have ever managed to provide. There music propelled you along and provided there soundman Steve Gordon was in the groove the dub sections were confectionary for the ears. They were all gifted artists in there own rights and it is a pity that they were never allowed to develop beyond the local Cape Town scene. I have recently caught up with some of the members and I know that they are still passionate about there music but in the end we are left with the memories of a band which was just too far ahead of there time..never have a band given so much and expected so little…RESPECT!!!

Introducing Sista Ites - A South African Reggae Empress

Born Ignatia Shabalala, Sista-Ites as known was born in Pietermaritzburg in Natal in a family of musicians. She started her music career in 1989 by joining the group called Hot Soul Singers and later that year joined the group Angolah & The Groaners until 1994.She started working with local bands while in Soshanguve until 2002.

In 2002 she started working with Tidal Waves who were acting as her backing band while singing covers and also worked with the Yeoville Crew band. In 2006 Sista-Ites started doing backing voices in the studio for Psalm 133, Lion Silver Dread and recently with Wellington.

The album African Woman by Sista-Ites was released in 2009 and presently she is working with Psalm 133 as her backing instrumentalist while she works as a backing vocalist for Psalm 133 and doubles as backing vocalist for various artists in the studio.She is capable of writing her own songs.

Sista-Ites is back in the studio working with PSALM 133 as the producer of her next album for 2011 and she is one of the performing artist who is slowly building her crowd and a serious fanbase….

She also performed atReggae Strong for Peace concert as a backing vocalist for Angolah and the Groaners

Mphe Sebakanyana is Rastaman Nkushu's latest album

Rastaman Nkushu has again released another massive album called Mphe Sebakanyana(give me a moment), Nkushu and his producer took almost twelve months to record the 14 tracks album, it was mixed several time by diferent recording studios until it get its real sound for the poeple. The album include a ragga beat,commercial reggae and dub songs.The album talks about love,happiness,Rastafari and many aspects about life in general..The album also has an English song composed by the late Lucky Dube and the Richard Siluma called 'My babe dont cry' as a tribute to Lucky Dube, another song in the album is 'a re ba kwele mang gore nkushu ke lerasta la go ja nama'(who is saying that Rasta Nkushu eat meat), in this song he talk about people who are saying bad thins about Rastafarians. Songs like 'ke lumile ke mmutla' and 'ntate ntshwarele'(Lord forgive me),which were included in the album because of public demand.they where released in the early 2oo3 from the album called Re sepela boshego le maRasta(we walk during the night with Rastas) .The album is available in all records bars..

Rastaman Nkushu born Mackson Hlagala Nkushu is known for singing Reggae music in his own mother-tongue(Sepedi). Rastaman nkhushu is also a Gospel music programme presenter at Lebowakgomo radio station ( Glfm) from 6 to 9 am every Sunday.'bieng a presenter is another way of marketing my brand name as Rastaman Nkushu because i meet different artist and people telling me how they feel about me and my music,says Rastaman Nkushu.He is also helping n promoting other Gospel artists like Bahlankana gospel group,Tshenolo Christian Church,Trica Selala,Evelen tau and many others.Nkushu says he gain a lot of experience workin with these artists because they are singing Gospel music. i was involved in many music project like i can sing music competition.He was involved in the shootin of Rasta documentary on SABC tv andit was played several times on cutting edge programe on SABC1.NKUSHU performed with different artist like Colbert Mukwevho,Carlos Djedje, with Dakota music promotion in Polokwane.this latest album is published by Gallo music and the executive producer is Richard Siluma.. He started his musical career in the early 90's, he joined a local band called Caly and the Gang band as a keyboard player. they were playing all types of music- After Caly and the Gang Nkushu joined another band called Sydney and the Monkeys which use to play with different artists in Limpopo province, he then decided to leave the band and went to study at university of Venda in 1994 studying B Adminnistration. He fell in love with Reggae music while studying in Venda, he was also influenced by local artists in Venda. still at Univen Nkushu joined a musical organisation which use to play all over Venda until 2002 when he went to Johannesburg to record his first demo. Nkushu released his first album tittled 'Re sepela boshego le maRasta'(we walk in the night with Rastas) in 2003, he met Richard Siluma in 2004 and they started working together in many projects albums

Born MBONGENI WILLIAM SKOSANA on the27th July 1972 ,HE started a music career with Angolah&The Groaners as a keyboard player in 1995 until 1997 when he started working on developing his own projects.The same year he joined Tidal Waves as a keyboardist until 2001 when he started helping upcoming reggae artists as a keyboard player.

2006 was the release of the {SYMBOL}album by David Dott which was produced and performed by Mbongeni and produced by his recording label Itumele records cc while his debut album{FREEDOM] was released the same year in November.Unforeseen matters made it impossible for him to promote the albums.

In 2008 Psalm 133 worked with Born Afrikan as a keyboard player and presently working with a very conscious sister from Pretoria Sister-Ites as a keyboard player also.Sister-Ites released an album African Woman. Psalm 133 is presently working on his album to release it as a new project for 2009/2010.

Johannesburg ...Former Robben Island political prisoner James Mange in partnership with Carlos Djedje are launching the Reggae Moonshine Africa Festival - a dream from behind bars in Robben Island, at the Bassline in Newtown on Friday 22nd October at 15:00.

This is the official media launch, of the Reggae Conference and Festival taking place at Mangaung in Bloemfontein early next year. James Mange and Carlos Djedje will unveil the programme and the build up to 2011 festival which includes other acts from Africa, Jamaica, US, and UK.“We are launching this festival to revive the revolutionary ethos of Reggae music,” explained Mange.
He added that this is a call for the revival of reggae music as The Revolutionary ethos for mankind. The conference is about living healthily from the earth. The resources from nature need nurturing and mobilisation for the consciousness of saving the world by respecting the earth and whatever comes from it.Mange will also be accompanied by a Cultural Youth Group from his foundation namely, The James Mange Foundation in White City Jabavu. The Youth Centre is located at Thulare Community Centre and was renovated in July by their counterparts from Mange’s Foundation in Aubervilliers Paris in France.
James Mange, Carlos Djedje and a band of seasoned musicians will perform James’ new compositions from his new CD aptly titled “Greed is killing the World”.

About James Mange and Carlos Djedje
James Mange went into exile in 1976 to join ANC and became commander of Umkhonto we Sizwe. He was sentenced to death for high treason after being arrested in 1978. He spent 12 months on death row. The sentence was later commuted to 20 years imprisonment on Robben Island of which he served 13 years before being released on the 27th April 1991. During his imprisonment he formed a band and taught music to the inmates on Robben Island. The band played on special occasions like New Year celebration for the political prisoners. In exile James was prominent as one of the founder members of the Nova Katenga Cultural Committee. In 1991 after being released from Robben Island James and his band the Whiplashes Played festivals like Big Bash, ANC rallies, in France, Children of Africa in Nigeria.

Carlos Djedje’s achievements include musical tours to Japan, England, Mozambique, Botswana and Swaziland where, in 1983, played with Peter Tosh. In 1993 he played with Andrew Tosh, Don Carlos and Eric Donaldson.

In and around Eersterust, ina Pretoria, his hometown, they call him 'Rasta', 'Jahman' the 'Prophet'but he prefers to be called 'Jah Rootsman', his anointed name and Togetherness, Peace and Loveare his principles and cornerstone.Being one of the founding fathers of Rastafari in South Africa, he has become the spiritual leader forRastas and non-Rastas, not only in Eersterust, but also to his Rastafarian followers all over theAfrican continent. From the Cape, up to places and countries as far afield as Malawi, Nigeria,Uganda, Ghana and Zimbabwe.Jah Rootsman or Johnny Mash, (his Babylon name), gained a nationwide following for his 'Dub-Poetry', of which so far, he is still the only one in the country. He was also the first to utilize theJamaican dialect (patois), in his home grown poetry to fuse it with the Reggae Dub Riddim.During the heydays of apartheid, being a conscious activist, Rootsman used to recite his protestpoetry in community halls and clandestine gatherings in the townships; to the chagrin of the ignobleauthorities, who would retaliate with dogs, batons and teargas.The fact that Jah Rootsman can seamlessly and effortlessly fuse and integrate his Dub Poetry,easily , with the Reggae Dub Riddim, his vast collection is unparallel in the countryIn December 1985, he visited the Caribbean Islands, including Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republicand the beautiful Jamaica, where he received his 'grounation' from mentors such as Ras Michael,Sister Nancy, Mikey Smith, Bredda Joseph and many more others who blessed and inspired him tobecome what he is today - a Lion of legendary status inna Babylon. Above all, it was Linton KwesiJohnson who created the Dub-Poet in him.In 1986, potpourri afforded him his debut as a then proclaimed Dub-Poet. This was followed withfurther appearances on television, the Black Sun, The Warehouse, Zimbabwe, Durban, Swazilandand various cultural and political occasions countrywide. He has also been involved with E.S.P.programs at Wits University and in poetry discussions at high schools around the country.In 1987 he opened the Island Coffee Bar in Eersterust, where Rastas from all over the land came topay homage.The 1988 T.O.M.S./ROLAND/RADIO 5/ Demo Competition commended him with a certificate for hisconcerted effort in supporting the South African Music Revolution.In 1989, he did a showcase on his mentor, Linton Kwesi Johnson at the Windybrow theatre.and in 1990 took part in that Potpourri festival. In May of that year, he was also awarded aCertificate for Best Actor in the play 'A Shrink for Azania' written by his friend, Robert Pearce.During the winter of 1992, he appeared at Kippies featuring in 'Dub Poetry - The CaribbeanConnection'The Congress of South African Writers presented 'Literature to the Public' in Feb, 1993 where heshared a stage with acclaimed artists like Vusi Mahlasela, Jenny Goosen, Nape Motana and others.Later that same year, 1993, he again visited Germany, touring the country from Berlin to Munichand in 1994 he performed with LKJ at the Tesson Theatre in Johannesburg.March 1995, he was with Lesego Rampolokeng and Benjamin Zephaniah, a British Dub-Poet, at theMega Music Warehouse in Newtown Johannesburg and also performed for President Mandela inEersterust in June of that year.In September of 1995, he organised the most successful march in Pretoria against the forces ofBabylon in the history of Rastafari in the country. After that, with the Twelve Tribes, thecountry’s first Niyabhingi was celebrated in his yard.During the winter of '96, he opened the 'Africa Day Peace Concert' for Eric Donaldson, Andrew Tosh,Don Carlos and the Roots Radics Band at the Johannesburg Stadium.On 12th October 1996, he main-evented the "Reggae SunSplash" at Ting Country,organised by 'Tings an Tymes' in Pretoria, sharing the stage with icons like Carlos Djedje.1997 saw him as the main feature with the Poetry Festival, "Week of the Poets" at the State Theatre,Pretoria.The simultaneous deaths of his two sons in 1998 created in him a determination to carry on Jah Worksand to magnify and manifest HIM Haile Selassie I.1999 and 2000 brought him into closer contact with the children of Tafari all over the world via theWorld Wide Web or the Internet.On 04th of May 2001, he again organized the second, largest and last March for Rastafari.With the trauma of divorce at the end of 2001, his life was radically and forever turnedaround, evolving into a profound spiritual rebirth. In a renewed sense of perceptive awareness; headvanced to a level of intuitive, holistic and lateral thought cognition, effective on a 3rddimension.His poem, 'Fear not gentle Dove' was chosen from among 33 other poets worldwide in Dec, 2001, tobe included in the Poetry Collection, ”The Sound of Poetry” by the International Library ofPoetry; 'for having that expressive quality that can only be appreciated not only in print, but throughthe spoken word as well'.Anthony 'Speedo' Wilson, an Eersterust actor/playwright, wrote and directed a musical called 'DieAfspringers' in 2002, based on Rootsman’s poem titled 'Eersterust'.The Poetry Institute of Africa, in 2006, published his poem 'I miss in the Morning', in the anthology'Soulfully Seeking'.After more than two decades under the bitter yoke of babylon, Rootsman consciously freed himself,when in August 2008, saw the completion of the most startling, provocative, explosive andconscious hardcore poetry at it’s best, in the form of his CD titled, 'Poems from the Krypt'. Radical Dread- another Reggae artist from Limpopo in Venda

Avhapfani ‘Spear’ Sadiki was born in 1981-October-04 at a village called Tsianda in Venda, he was nicknamed Spear by people from the village because of his passion and love of Reggae music. He was inspired by his late uncle who use to play various artists like Alpha Blony, Israel Vibrations, Bob Marley, Burning Spear and many more. His love for Reggae music is dated from 1995 during the apartheid system in the country. He is a Rastafarian with an aim of sending Jah messages to the people through Reggae music.

Many people knows him as Spear but his new musical name is Radical Dread and he is currently working on a new album with Masana Records where many artists like Jahman Chiganja, Jacky Nethomboni, Humbulani Ramagwedzha, Gwandread recorded their latest albums. His new CD is called ‘The coming of Jah’ and he is working with DJ Davic, Phumudzo ‘Ras Phuilk’ Luvhimbi, Phathutshedzo ‘Jahkid’ Sadiki and Samuel ‘Judah’ Rambuluvhulu of the famous Reggae band called Sam and the Rastas. This album contains massive Venda and English songs with powerful messages. ‘I can promise you that it’s gonna bomb down the gods of babylon and their wicked system’ said Radical Dread. He says he chose to call himself Radical Dread because he sees himself as someone new and unique into the Reggae industry and he says he is gonna make a great impact in the world of Reggae music.

This should not be confusing people of Tsianda in Venda its just a change of name whereby Avhapfani is now recording his music under the name of Radical Dread not Spear, the brand name that he wanna build is Radical Dread not Spear.

JOHANNESBURG – A Pretoria rastafarian musician, Carlos Djedje, has presented Bob Marley’s wife Rita with two awards.
The “Afreeka Freedom Walk” awards formed part of Black History month and were held at Constitutional Hill in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
The first award is a lower body statue with broken chains on the ankles and the other one is shaped as a pyramid bearing the names of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.
Djedje said the statue symbolised the first day of slavery to the time when Africa was declared free but incomplete.
“Africa is free but incomplete. We are still fighting poverty, women and child abuse and diseases. The war is not yet over,” said Djedje.
Djedje presented the statue to Marley because “her husband preached the message of love in his music.”
“I’m giving the Marleys my love. She (Rita) has been a fighter and still is one,” said Djedje.
He said Africans had been running but now it was time to walk.
“I have received gifts before but I have never received this kind. I am really honoured” said Marley.
“I will place it in Bob Marley’s museum. I’m proud to be here at a time like this, Black History celebration month,” said Marley.

After a long listening of the song called ‘time is getting harder’ by Culture in their last album together with Joseph Hill called World Peace, I tried to write down few lines but they are not real lyrics and people can correct me as I sometimes don’t get what Joseph Hill is saying in his many songs

What is important about the song is that it talks about global economic conditions and other hardships of today’s life. What I like about reggae music is that it got a lot of prophecy in it, one can recall prophecy of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lucky Dube, Burning Spear and also Joseph Hill.

This song was released in 2003 and it got a lot of meaning to the world today. Recently we have just seen a global economic slump resulting in povery, inflation, job losses, and unnecessary wars. In the song Hill talks about people having no food to eat, from this line we have just seen how poverty kills African people everyday. It is true when elephants are fighting the grass suffers, in many African countries we have just seen how people at grassroots suffers. In another line, the song says ‘ the working man want this… and the lazy man want just the same’, yes it is true we see so much crime happening everyday, because of high unemployment rate we see crime being so high. He is simply saying jobless people want what working people have, they do crime.
Hill as well address the issue of inflation in this line ‘You forward to the market to make a purchase every item rise sky high, the longer you live the more you got to pay’. Today families which use to afford two loafs of bread everyday are unable because of price hikes, bread is now a luxury which many people can no longer afford. On the hand we cannot ignore the climbing of fuel prices.
‘Think about the greedy, they leave nothing for the needy’- again Hill talks about the greedy countries (powerhouses) and greedy people. we have just witness corruption which took place in so many governments whereby there was nothing left for poor people, we have also seen how powerful countries takes forcefully from poor countries leaving people helpless and hopeless.

In reggae music what is important is not how the singer rhymes but the message sent to the masses of the world. A reggae singer’s main goal is to inform and educate the masses so that they make informed choices. It is then up to the listener to take action

There are many reggae songs which depicts reality and which prophecies, but I just chose this one because it is relevant to the current global economic conditions.

This is a call to all reggae music lovers to come together and enjoy good live music right on stage. This massive Reggae concert will be the first to be held in Limpopo and all reggae inthusiasts are invited to come and enjoy. All reggae lovers from all walks of life are called to come and chant down babylon deep in Polokwane(Jack Botes Hall). South African reggae music

During apartheid era in South Africa it was difficult for local musicians to express their concerns and rebel against the system via music. During those hard times only international musicians were in liberty to raise concerns about the South African situation, we can recall artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Joseph Hill and many others. After long struggle to record reggae music, Lucky Dube ended up releasing a massive reggae album which was banned by nationalist’s government. After the ban of this album life became difficult for local musicians.

The gap between international and local (South African) reggae music.

When international reggae musicians enjoyed singing about South African conditions during apartheid this really disadvantaged our local artists. The international reggae music agenda was more focused on the fight against apartheid (especially in South Africa) and colonialism and also African Consciousness. It was not surprising in Africa only to see one artist representing Africa on a global reggae scale. International musicians like Bob Marley became popular and powerful and it was not easy for any artist especially from South Africa to compete. When Lucky Dube was called to come and perform at the Reggae Sunsplash in 1991 it was a biggest achievement for Africa and for himself. Many of our local artists can learn a lot from Lucky Dube and they can also reach were he was in terms of music.

The remaining fact is that the power of international artists’ impact negatively on local artist who also try to push the same agenda, this happened in almost all music genres globally, for example the US Hip Hop Star Tupac Shakur, who also influenced and changed RAP industry globally. It is not surprising to hear people saying local music is boring, given the nature and the initial aim of reggae music its agenda is the same but it is up to the individual artists to be creative and innovative. There are some people who think that when a local artist talks about Africa unite in his song he copies Bob Marley, this is not a fact, rather a fact is that yes, Bob Marley was the first one to talk about it. From 2005 until 2008 I took my time and listen to South African music trying to understand their agenda and I was impressed. What I have learnt is that our local artists are more creative and they are appealing, the only factor that makes things difficult for them is marketing and promotion. Our artists are not doing enough to market their music.
Many of our artists are self promoting, they go around with cars selling their music and it is not easy because they are not marketed by big recording companies. In 2008 I had an interview with local reggae musician Rastaman Nkushu who said it is difficult to market an album as a self promoting artist. There are some reggae artist who are contracted with recording companies but still they are not promoted like other artists in other genres.

South African masses still hold negative thinking about Reggae music

There are few South Africans who really enjoy listening to reggae music and this is a worrying factor. How can our own local artists represent us globally when we don’t support them locally? Without the support of Jamaican masses artists like Peter Tosh and Bob Marley wouldn’t be known like they are today. The point I ma emphasizing is that charity begins at home. Last year I conducted an informal survey trying to know why many South African youth are not interested in reggae music, according to my findings even if they may not be valid the respondents said reggae music is the music for people who smoke marijuana and for people who are old fashioned (primitive), some says they don’t understand the lyrics, this survey was conducted at University of Limpopo- Turfloop campus, but some few students say they love reggae music. There is still lack of information about reggae music and Rastafari, many people think that one should be a Rasta in order to listen and understand reggae music and this is wrong, the fact is that reggae music is the music for the people of the world and it is not discriminating against anyone. (The distinction between Rastafari and Reggae music will be dealt with next time)

BlackJah Band- Another powerful reggae sounds from Limpopo

Limpopo has again produced another powerful reggae messengers.

BlackJah Band is a new reggae act which comprise of three energetic messengers hailing from Musina in Limpopo. the trio have just droped out a new massive album called Free man. the group's lead vocalist Witness a.k.a BlackJah have collaborated with the Zionist Descendents as backing vocalists on this album. in December last year they were entertaining the masses at Senwabarwana shoping complex perfoming thier new album songs live. Free Man is a massive album of ten powerful and moving reggae tracks aimed to educate and entertain reggae lovers countrywide. they sing in English and Tshivenda.

songs in this album were produced and composed by the mighty FW Ntshangase, backing vocalists by the Zion Descendents and sound ingineering and instruments by Hani Mutele. this album is available on CD, DVD and Cassette. currently BlackJah Band is self promoting and they are travelling the whole South Africa selling thier music and also performing live. BlackJah is made up of three energetic brothers who are deeply rooted in Rastafari.

the tittle track called Free Man is a good song which talks about the former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela, the lyrics goes like ".....respect Madiba respect Madiba.....".

on the album cover there is a picture of the man himself BlackJah wearing Rasta colours.

Rastaman Nkushu- His musical journey as South African reggae artist.

Rastaman Nkushu was born in 1970-24-December as Mackson Hlagala Nkushu(real names) in Limpopo Province formerly known Northern Province at the homeland of Ga-Mphahlele- Seleteng. He is the first recognised reggae artists in South Africa to record music in Sepedi (his mothertongue). He started schooling at Littlebedview Primary school and he further went to Mathomomayo High school in Limpopo province. After matriculating, Rasta Nkushu went to further his studies in University of Venda in Limpopo where he developed love of reggae music in the year 2000.it is not surprising to see him falling in love with reggae music in Venda because there are many reggae artists in this area, artists like Colbert Mukwevho and Ntshenge are from there, maybe he got influence from these guys.

His childhood reggae artists are Don Carlos and Burning Spear and our local legend Lucky Dube. “My favourite reggae artist now is my brother Lucky Dube, I have been looking up to him as my role model”-said Nkushu. As a reggae artist Nkushu also listen to variety of music genres, he like listening to gospel and traditional African music but he says reggae always plays were he is. Nkushu does not only sings he is also an instrumentalist, he plays keyboards and percussions in the band. Rastaman Nkushu is a devoted Rastafarian and he eats porridge, rice, vegetables and salads. Rastas are people who like to keep fit with healthy bodies and minds; Nkushu likes to take part in extramural activities. He is also an informed citizen who likes reading newspapers and watching television, as a musician he likes reading music news and his favourite colours are Rastafari colours (red, black, yellow and green). “I enjoy watching music videos”,he said.

“I call my music moshito wa kucheku”(rhythm of kucheku), said Nkushu. Kucheku is a Sepedi name for reggae. This name emerged from the beat/rhythm found in reggae music which goes like ‘kucheku, kucheku,kucheku’. Rasta Nkushu’s first album was recorded and released in 2003 called ‘Re sepela boshego le Ma-Rasta’(‘we walk at night with Rastas’) featuring massive songs like ‘ke lomile ke mmutla’(I am bitten by the rabbit’)’ this album was released by Ada Record Label and it received massive support from music lovers from all walks of life in South Africa. This album was one of its kind in the music industry in South Africa because Nkushu was singing in his mothertongue (Sepedi) and all people stood up and chanted. ‘Re sepela boshego le Ma-Rasta’ was also played on many SABC radio stations and community radios all over South Africa, radio stations like Thobela FM, Mungana Lonene FM and Phalafala Fm were some SABC stations which played this album. Community radio stations like Radio Turf, Sekgosese community radio,Botlokwa community radio and all others also played Nkushu’s music.

After this album Rasta Nkushu met with a music producer and promoter Richie S and he signed a contract with him. Nkushu started working with Richie S as his producer on September 2004. “I met Richie S on September 2004 during a Thobela FM’s reggae concert at Seshego stadium outside Polokwane after an unbelievable performance, we met and he invited me to Johannesburg were I signed a recording deal with him”-said Nkushu. He recorded another massive album called ‘Ba ntimile zollo’(they refused to give me marijuana’) produced by Richie S which put Nkushu’s landmark in reggae music locally and globally. “Almost all artists were surprised after I released this album and reggae music lovers also supported it all over Jah world”. ‘katiba ye ke ya mang?’(Whose cap is this?) was one hit on this album which created reggae vibes all over South Africa.
Rastaman Nkushu also performed with other big South African artists like Mafikizolo,Malaika, Mzwake Mbuli, Thandiswa Mazwai, Arthur Mafokate, Solly Moholo, Winnie Mashaba and the great Colbert Mukwevho in live concerts and in government rallies. In 2005 he was also called to perform on 16 June (Youth Day) Concert in Johannesburg and he was the only artist from Limpopo Province, “I had an electrifying performance and the masses at FNB stadium responded positively towards my music, everyone was chanting and feeling irie at the stadium”, said Nkushu after entertaining South African masses at FNB stadium on 16 June 2005.

Nkushu came back again with another burning album in 2006 called ‘Ke le-Rasta 4 life”(I am Rasta 4 life) where he worked with the late Lucky Dube’s band( Slaves). In this album Rasta Nkushu tells the world that he is a Rasta for life no matter what, he talks about his personal religious beliefs in Rastafari and he also confirms that Haile Selassie I is the King of Kings and the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Just like other albums he released this one was also supported by radio stations and all reggae fans in South Africa not only Limpopo province. Rastaman Nkushu is also a good performer live on stage, he is a marvel to watch believe me I have seen him with my own eyes. He performs on stage with a band and his back vocalist (three women) just like the I threes of Bob Marley. He also performs at reggae dub sessions in Limpopo and on government events. Nkushu promotes the use of local languages and he says singing reggae in Sepedi makes him feel proud to be a South African and it connects his music with local reggae fans.

Rastaman Nkushu is now busy working on a new album and he is also shooting a DVD for this new project. He was in Cape Town when he gave me this information via cellphone communication. May Jahrastafari pave the way for him and protect him and also guide him in his career as a reggae artist. We also give thanks and praises to the Most High Jahrastafari for sending us men like Nkushu who send good messages via reggae music using African language (Sepedi (Northern Sotho))

Nkululeko Madolo aka BLACK DILLINGER, was born in a Township called Guguletu in the ghettoes of Capetown, South Africa. In the 80s and 90s of the last century BLACK DILLINGER grew up in the middle of the black uprising in South Africa, which culminated in the release of Nelson Mandela and the abolishment of the Apartheid system. After the defeat of Apartheid, BLACK DILLINGER started his steep career as reggae artist, working with Capetown Legends like Zoro, the leader of Chronic Clan Crew, alongside Crosby and Jessedan and with many other fellow musicians such as Suga, Spencer and Ginger (Ghetto Muffin). In 2004, a tune called Big Trouble was featured on Germany`s biggest Reggae magazine called Riddim and BLACK DILLINGER was soon invited to play his first gig in Europe in 2004. It took just one peformance at the Yaam Club in Berlin to convince Ganjaman, producer at MKZWO, of the enormous talent of this upcoming African artist. The two soon became friends and black Dillinger soon began they began to record Dillinger`s debut album LIVE AND LEARN at MKZWO records. While working on his album, BLACK DILLINGER, established himself firmly in the European reggae scene by playing with stars like Gentleman, Ras Shiloh, Bunju Banton, Freddy McGregor, Richie Spice, Chuck Fender, Queen Omega, Jah Mason, Gregory Issac, Eventon Blender, Antony B and many others. He also released sever- al 7-inches in cooperation with different producers around Europe. In April 2007, his first album LIVE AND LEARN was finally released, including big features with artist like Vido Jelashe, Rebellion the Recaller and Jah Meek. Now watch out for the upcoming smash-hit album LOVE LIFE, which also includes Dillinger`s latest hit AMERICA! This big tune is also featured on THE GANGSTALAW riddim selection, alongside Jamaican superstars such as Luciano, Turbulence, Natural Black or Luthan Fire. Both, THE GANGSTALAW riddim selection and the upcoming LOVE LIFE album were produced at IMMUSIC.

BLACK DILLINGER

Born Nkululeko Madolo, Black Dillinger spent the majority of his childhood in the Gugulethu ghettos of Cape Town in South Africa. he beleives in justice, equal opportunities and human kindness, regardless of skin colour or backround- he is a devoted Rastafatian . he have already began turning his own experinces into music while he was at school. he initially slipped into the role of of deejay with the name of Ninja, later then as a conscious singer who "deal in Jah", hence the Black Dillinger name. in 2005 he visited Germany where he recorded the two recently released albums " live and learn"(MKZwo Rec) and the split album "The ALTIMATE"(Immusic) with the Gambian artist Rebellion the Recaller. Dillinger has been getting positive feedback from colleagues, friends and fans, from Africa and Europe and recently he has received enthusistic responses from Jamaica with renowned producers like Bobby Digital having already knocked on his door.

Why Bob Marley Should Be Jamaica's 8th National Hero

It's been almost 27 years since the death of Bob Marley, yet despite previous appeals by the Marley Family and a host of posthumous awards Jamaica still refuses to accord the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley national hero status, the country's highest honour. Even when Bob was a young musician from Trenchtown, his music wasn't recognized by his own people in Jamaica until his first album "Catch A Fire" became an international hit, thanks to Chris Blackwell, but also the fact that Rastafarians were regarded as outcasts, or "Black Heart" men in the 60s and 70s.
I'm just getting warmed up!
Bob Marley deserves to be among the fraternity of Jamaica 's honored national heroes. He has done more for Jamaica through his music than most politicians have done to temper violence and TV commercials to promote tourism, in life and in death. Marley's music served, and continues to be, the unofficial spokesperson for Jamaica . Even his song "One Love" was adopted as a theme song for the Jamaican Tourist Board and voted as Anthem of the Millennium by the British Broadcasting Company (BBC).
Marley's laundry list of recognitions is undoubtedly more reason to dub him, not just a national hero, but an international icon. His birthday – Feb. 6 – is declared a national holiday in Jamaica and he was awarded the Order of Merit (OM) in 1981, which is Jamaica 's third highest honor.
The United Nations awarded him the Medal of Peace and he was voted Artiste of the Century by Billboard magazine. Bob was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and his album Exodus was chosen Album of the Century by TIME magazine. His Legend album received the Diamond Award and he is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by National Academy of Recording Artistes. Last but not least, Bob has a star encrusted on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and an award in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
As Robert Palmer wrote in a tribute to Marley upon his induction, "No one in rock and roll has left a musical legacy that matters more or one that matters in such fundamental ways." Singer and human rights activist, Bono of the rock group U2 said, "the voice of Bob Marley is the voice of reason. So when I heard Bob Marley, I not only felt it, I understood it."
From Bob's perspective, reggae gave a voice to the poor and disfranchised citizens of Jamaica and to the world. In so doing, he also instilled pride and dignity in their heritage, however depressing the realities of their daily existence was. Moreover, Marley's reggae anthems provided uplifting rhythm and melody that induced what Marley called "positive vibrations" in all who heard it and 'hit you without feeling pain.' Regardless of how you heard it - political music suitable for dancing, or dance music with a potent political subtext – Marley's music was a powerful remedy for troubled times. Amnesty International uses Bob's song "Get Up, Stand Up," as their anthem. To many, Marley was a true musical ambassador and a messenger of peace. Though he never aligned himself with any political party, he found an urgent calling to bring together a divided nation ripped apart by political violence and hostility in the late 70s. At the Smile Jamaica Concert held on December 5, 1976 at the National Heroes Park in Kingston , Bob Marley & The Wailers performed in front of 80,000 people and in an unprecedented move, warranted on stage Prime Minister Michael Manley and opposition leader, Edward Seaga to put their hands together in unity. So, why not add Bob Marley to the roster of National Heroes?

Is it because Bob Marley was a Rastaman who smoked Cannabis and promoted its use as a religious sacrament?

Fact: Jesus Christ and his apostles used a cannabis-based anointing oil to help cure people with crippling diseases. The truth is, the opposition to name Marley Jamaica's 8th national hero is coming mainly from members of Jamaica's influential Christian church community and the upper classes, all of whom Marley took pot-shots at during his lifetime, as he referred to as "The Establishment." In the Jamaica Observer daily newspaper, columnist Lloyd B. Smith noted that Marley was "unlikely to be given the country's highest honour, considering Rastafari is still not fashionable among most Jamaicans." Indeed, because of this backward attitude, Rastafarians find it difficult to get (not find) a decent job, therefore they learn a trade and become carpenters, craftsmen, musicians, or entrepreneurs. Moreover, the issue of Bob's personal and religious beliefs have been a foremost argument against his inclusion in the select club of Jamaica 's national heroes. "How long before we can be seen as just human beings?" said Bob in his song "Burnin' and Lootin.' Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds like religious prejudice and discrimination on the part of the government? I think this qualifies as a human rights issue! What happened to "Out of Many, One People." Or is it, "Out of Many, One Religion." In Judge Not, a joyous gallop of ska, Bob chides, "While you talk about me / Someone else is judging you."

Next, is it because he wasn't thrown in prison for civil disobedience or ignite a rebellion?

Fact: Bob Marley was a revolutionary and champion of equal rights and justice. He spread the message of love and Rastafari to the "Cold War" world. Since Marley's death, Rastafarianism has been embraced by many people on an international scale from Japan to Johannesburg .

Next, is it because he was a notorious womanizer?

Fact: So was King Soloman, John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. According to a TIME magazines cover story,"The Secret Agony of Martin Luther King, Jr.," "womanizing was the source of such agonizing moral conflict that MLK was compelled to confess his most enduring extramarital affair to his wife at "her most vulnerable moment — days after she recovered from a hysterectomy."

Is it because he didn't hold political office?

Fact: Neither did Marcus Garvey or Martin Luther King, Jr., and they are both national heroes.

Finally, is it because the national heroes advisory committee is out of touch?

Fact: Yes, and absent minded.
The fact remains for most casual listeners, reggae music can be reduced to one artist Bob Marley. For most tourists and travelers, Jamaica is synonymous with Bob Marley. Bob's music is a like a flag or a text book to those who have never been to Jamaica or can only read about the country in global studies.
Most importantly, Bob Marley is largely responsible for the worldwide popularity of reggae music and with it subjects, including faith, love, relationships, poverty injustice and other broad social issues that we can all relate to and experienced first hand, or through the eyes of others. Bob Marley has paved the way for many aspiring and celebrated artists to compete on the world stage of music. Because of Bob, reggae music is now coveted category at the annual Grammy Music Awards.
Bob's music bridges the cross-cultural divide, soothes the heart and mind from what Bob called "mental slavery," and can be heard by people of every gender, race, religion, color, ethnic background and political affiliation.
Without the legendary Bob Marley, there would not have been a Reggae Academy Awards Ceremony that took place on February 24th that recognized the musical talents and achievements of celebrity reggae artists from Jamaica and around the world, or the Smile Jamaica concert that pumped sun bathers, tourists and the almighty dollar, as well as the strong Euro into Jamaica's inflated economy. Bob Marley is still serving the people through his music and its message that advocates for social change – for freedom for all mankind, regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic status. He is a legendary icon that cannot and should not be forgotten. Award Bob Marley the Order of National Hero and continue to make Jamaica proud.

it is very disturbing to learn that people of South Africa are not aware of thier own reggae artists.when i grow up i only knew about international reggae artists and only Lucky Dube,by that time because of the reggae foundation i thought Dube was a Jamaican. Today there many local artist to chose from. but i am not saying people must stop listening to international reggae, i am only saying they must support their local reggae. Jamican artists had thier own way of making reggae sounds and so does our local messengers. South Africa is a country full of creativity, culture and deep history, and there is no way our artist can run out of good reggae sounds which can do well internationally. People from Germany cannot know about Nchenge if the we don't support his music locally. artists like Rasta Nkushu, Colbert Mukwevho, Khakhathi, Senzo Mthethwa, Nchenge and many more can be like Bob Marley if we support them. another thing is this the negative publicity by informationless opinion leaders who says that reggae is the symbol of drug addicts. this is a total misinformation about our beautiful fruitful music. REGGAE IS THE MUSIC FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD. Lastly before i forget, i ask the SABC radio to give reggae enough time on air like all other genres. from reggae people can learn a lot unlike other genres where vulga words,crime,sex,violence,teenage pregnancy are promoted. South Africans remember Steve Biko

in 1946, 18 December Bantu Steve Biko was born in Tarkastad and sadly he dies in police custody at Pretoria in 1977,12 September( today) in the hands of apartheid police, and he was buried in 24 Septmber 1977(http://www.sbf.org.za/). oh, what a very short political life.

the life and ideas of the young activist Steve BIko have inspired black people all over the world, his ideas and writings on Black Consciousness( DR Marcus Garvey) empowered black people with new sense of self worth, self motivation and an attitude of activism. Biko believed in the power of ideas to grab the imagination of oppressed peole and transporm thier low self worth into high self esteem. he tried ti fing a way of uniting supporters of the banned PAC(Pan Africanist Congress) and ANC(Anfican NAtional Congress) by creating a system of thouoght(ideology) for the liberation movement in South Africa. BIKO wanted black people to understand why they were being opperessed.

AFRICANS deserve freedom

when i learn in the news that there are still civil wars in some parts of Africa tear drops from my eyes, when i also remember the days of slavery/colonialism/apartheid my blood boils. but what i know is that slavery ended in the world and all people have equal rights.

But we still see blood of innocent Africans flowing for no reason, i mean what is wrong or what needs to be done to end civil wars. when great world freedom icons like Prophet DR Marcus Mossiah Garvey, Bob Marley and others stood up and fight agains colonialism and racial discrimination they did not want things to be the way they are today. thier main aim was to unite Africans who were divided by the evil acts of slavery/colonialism. all we see is war,war and war and no peace in African states. the most painfull part of it is that innocent people including women and children are killed everyday during this wars. when will Africans end this wars and show the world that Africa is a good place where people live in peace and harmony. i think this wars have lot to do with lack of love and Ubuntu, whereby political leaders become so heartless and ruthless resulting in never ending wars. when i heard in the news that Angola after 16 years of civil war, today they have a chance to vote for thier leaders and have peace i felt so irie and i prayed before writing this article( Jah is powerful).

Angola goes to democratic elections

After 16 years of civil war and unrest today(05 Sept 2008) Angolan citizens have a chance to participate in democratic elections where they can elect thier leaders. The Angolan Civil War began in Angola after the end of the war for independence from Portugal in 1975(Wikipedia.org)

When the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) gained control of Angola's central government in 1976, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), two separate factions fighting for ascendancy, refused to recognize the new marxist-oriented government. In 1977, the MPLA captured the last major stronghold of the UNITA, whose leaders then fled to neighboring Zaire and Zambia, where they regrouped and revived their guerrilla warfare against the MPLA. White mercenaries, South Africans, and Portuguese frequently aided UNITA militarily, and covert American arms and assistance were reportedly received as well. In 1977, UNITA initiated a series of guerrilla raids on urban areas in Angola; a rebellion that UNITA supported was crushed. The following year a government offensive against the guerrillas failed to dislodge them from the large areas they controlled in southern Angola. Being sympathetic to South Africa, UNITA let South African forces maintain bases in its territory for raids into Namibia, or South West Africa. In the early 1980s, UNITA guerrillas had extended their control to central and southeast Angola. They won the support of Great Britain, France, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and a number of African nations, while the MPLA was backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba. The continual warfare disrupted Angola's economy and displaced one-sixth of its people, many of whom were forced to become refugees in Zaire, Zambia, and the Congo. The United States refused to recognize Angola's government as long as Cuban troops were in the country. In late 1988 US-mediated talks led to a signed peace accord, after which South Africa removed its troops, but the fighting continued between the marxist MPLA government and the UNITA rebels. Another truce in June 1989, signed by Angola's President Jose Eduardo dos Santos (1942-) and UNITA leader Jonas Savimibi (1934-2002), also failed to end hostilities. Cuba removed its troops in May 1991. After a year of negotiations, led by the Soviet Union and the US, Santos and Savimbi signed a peace treaty in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 31, 1991, officially ending the 16-year civil war.

Top Reggae radio presenters

the SABC radio gives little airtime to reggae music when compared to other genres but the little we get satisfy us as reggae addicts infected and affected with reggaemylitis. many SABC radio stations have special reggae shows/programs where they play reggae and ragga music. i listen to almost all reggae pragramms on radio and i have spotted some top presenters. me and my reggae friends have been arguing about which is the massive radio station when coming to reggae shows, and we have been differing. Community radio stations also give thier airtime to reggae music- and i think Sekgosese community radio is massive in reggae music. the reggae program of Sekho FM(as known by listeners) is hosted by the only massive Rootsman and it is called the Rasta's Battle, during this show listeners get information about reggae music, news, new releases and biographies of artists. the first time i listened to Rootsman i heard massive Dub songs(i still remeber this day he was playing Israel Vibration-'why worry' and 'same song') that was the first time i hear then on radio(especialy community radio). the music of which is played by Rootsman is always new to my ears and that is why i never miss the show. Rasta's Battle is broadcasted live from Sekgosese community radio on Sunday evening from 18:00 up until 21;00, three hot hours of reggae vibes on 100.30 fm(Sekgosese community Radio).

the other massive presenter is Bongolution of Radio 2000. Bongolution provide listeners with more of local reggae artists and information(updates) and listers are also given a chance to phone in and express thier views. Reggae radio programs are not only about playing music, but also to educate people about Rastafari and to give them knowledge and wisdom about the world. the radio 2000 reggae program is called Roots Rock Reggae and it is live on radio on Sunday evening.

Radio Turf 103.80 fm is another community radio which gives thier masses good reggae sounds on Sunday mornings, the show is called Reggae Beat(moshito wa Reggae) and it is hosted by the one and only Empress Happy, the first woman to broadcast reggae show. on Rasta Beat people also are given a chance to select songs and to send livications not dedications to thier friends/family. Forgotten heroes of the SS Mendi

on February 21, 1917, towards the end of the First World War, South Africa sufferered on eof its worst military tragedies with the sinking of the SS Mendi. the Mendi was carrying 805 Black privates, five White officers and 17 non-commisioned officers of the 5th Batallion of the South African Native Labour Corps( SANLC). They were sailing to France to help Britain fight war againts Germany.

it was a bleak winter morning. there was a thick fog, and most of the men were still asleep below deck. with no warning siren, the SS Darro, a larger passanger ship, struck the Mendi at full speed. Many of the men died on impact. the Mendi immediately started to sink. the SS Darro did not lower boats to rescue the survivors. it was left to the naval vessels, which responded to the Mendi 's distress signals, to rescue the fer survivors from the freezing water.

survivors of the tragedy continued thier military service in France. the men of the SANLC were mostly from the rural areas of the Pondo Kingdom in the Eastern Cape. all were volunteers. they were not used as fighting force, however, and were, in fact forbidden to carry weapons. instead they were used as labourers. some 350 of these men died in France during WW1. most are buried at the British military cemetery at Arquesla-Bataille in France. the rest retured home to a land oppressed by segregation and inequality(apartheid).

this brave men were forgotten, returning home in September 1917, the Black servicemen of SANLC did not receive any of the typical acknowledgements for oversea military service, only white servicemen and women received ribbons and medals in acknowlegdement of thier service to thier country. furthermore, relatives of the warriors who died on the SS Mendi received no official notice, compensation or acknowledgement from the British government(colonizers)

the lack of acknowledgement of the heroes of the SS Mendi changed i 1994. South Africa's first decocratically elected government was commited to honouring the brave men of the SS Mendi. In 1995, President Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth II of England unveiled a Mendi Memorial and Garden of Remembrace at Avalon cemetery in Soweto, where those who gave thier lives in WW1 and 2 are honoured.

Khakhathi Tshisukule.Khakhathi(meaning problem in English) is a local reggae artist from Venda. Khakhathi's songs are packed with good messages and he also talk about social issues. he sings in his venacular(Tshivenda) and his music is played at SABC radio stations- he also sings in Xitsonga.

THOHOYANDOU - The well-known reggae artist, Colbert Mukwevho of Harley and the Rasta Family, released a hot new album Mulovha, Namusi na Matshelo last Friday.
The album has been produced in collaboration with Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Program (TVEP). It features the TVEP song, which he wrote in protest against the high levels of women and child abuse in the area.
In addition to promoting a zero-tolerance message, the song also serves to inform the community of the support and empowerment services provided by the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme. The TVEP have been given 1 000 copies to use at their awareness campaigns. A series of concerts have been planned for the New Year to launch both the lead song and the album.
Colbert Mukwevho is one of the most talented and prolific reggae artists in South Africa. His voice has frequently been mistaken for Bob Marley’s and it is even rumored that Rita Marley wanted Colbert to visit Jamaica in honour of her husband. Mukwevho has written and produced more than 20 albums under prestigious recording companies such as CCP, the South African branch of EMI.
In 1997, his album ‘Harley and the Rasta Family’ on which he worked with the legendary Sly and Robbie, henchmen of Peter Tosh and Marley, won the much-coveted title of Best Reggae album at the South African Music awards.
Mukwevho has performed with internationally renowned artists such as the late Brenda Fassi, but he has also given his advice and support to local Venda artists such as Khakhathi and Friends. A loyal Venda man, Colbert Mukwevho frequently sings in Tshivenda and many of his songs have become Venda anthems.
His close relationship with TVEP began in 2003 when he agreed to judge a song competition for the organisation. He became very concerned when he learned of the horrendous statistics for rape in Thohoyandou, where 42 cases of rape are reported every month, of which more than half are children.
According to the CEO of the TVEP, Ms Fiona Nicholson, the TVEP is a non-profit and non-governmental organization, with the objective of creating a supportive environment for the victims of sexual abuse and family violence.
“A crucial aspect of Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Program’s work is the support given at the family violence and sexual abuse trauma centers located in two local hospitals, where survivors can receive counseling and medical treatment, and open a case if they so wish. At each trauma center, HIV post- exposure treatment is administered when applicable,” said Ms Nicholson.
She said that the TVEP also employs court chaperones and case monitors to provide support and advice for survivors throughout the traumatic legal process. “Its Break the Silence team runs educational campaigns in schools, churches, and other community groups to educate the community about rage, domestic violence, child abuse and HIV/Aids,” added Ms Nicholson.

Rasta is not about growing long dread and using herb, it is not also about reggae music, it is not also about the ideology- but Rasta is what you are inside you not how you look outside. many people have no clear understanding of Rastafari as a simple pure way of life. during the interview in Jamaaica Bob Marley was asked what is Rasta- he simply answered that Rasta is the way of good life and it got nothing to do with how one looks like outside- he gave an example of people who grow dreadlocks who also listen to reggae but who are not Rastafarians inside. one may wear Rasta colours and use the herb, but that does not mean he/she follows Rastafarian belief.

the use of herb(marijuana) by any other individuals who are not Rastas in heart have put Rastafari belief on rocks. many people who don't understand also blame Rasta for the use of herb- calling them drug addicts, i still remember when i was growing in my small village, some guys use to play Lucky Dube and Bob Marley and members of our community called them drug addicts and they were rejected in the community- even today when i visit home- i play loud reggae music and people came to tell my mama that i smoke marijuana. one does not need marijuana to be a real Rasta nor listening to reggae. in the beginning reggae music emerged as a vehicle through which Rasta people disseminated thier messages to the world. one can be a devoted Rasta without listening to reggae music. we all know that in our communities there are this people who just abuse marijuana- this people mix it with nicotine(tobacco) such people are the ones who should be labelled drug addicts not Rastas. lets face the truth- have you ever seen any Rasta using the herb in public- your answer is NO, i know. Rasta people know how,why and when to utalise the herb- they don't puff at taxi ranks and at bottle stores. they respect the herb.

Brenda Fassie- the Madonna of the townships

Brenda Fassie was born in Langa in 1964 and was named after the American country singer brenda Lee. Brenda started singing at the age of four while her mother played piano, she use to sing for tourists from the age of five and her voice soon became a legend in the townships. at the age of nineteen she recorded her first hit single 'Weekend Special' and she became a star. she was known by her fans as 'Mabrrr'

in her twenties, rumours of her drug habits began to surface and soon Brenda confirmed publicly that she was a drug addict. many people said it was because she received too much fame too early. in the early 1990's brenda's marriage broke and she was also convicted for assoulting a journalist, her mother also passed away and she struggled to record another album called 'Abantu bayajhuluma' because of her coccaine addiction.

in 1995 after losing afriend from drug overdose, she booked into a rehabiliation centre in an atempt to beat her own addiction.tragically in 2004 brenda Fassie 'the queen of the night' died if drug overdose at the age of 39. she leave her only son Bongani who is also a musician. she have recorded many albums during her career, her music is availalble in all music stores nationwide.

India is a country in South Asia and it was colonized by United Kingdom (Britain) from the mid ninetieth century. It became a modern nation state in 1947 after a struggle for independence.
This year of 2008 Indian people celebrate their 61st years of freedom after a long time of colonization. According to Indian and South African politicians and activists the freedom of independence of India did not benefit India only, but many countries like South Africa. South Africa and India have been working together in the struggle againts mental slavery (colonialism). Freedom icon Mahatma Gandhi who led the Indian National Congress during the struggle for independence played an important role in SA and India in the fight against colonialism.

Many Indians who live in South Africa are also celebrating this Indian achievement. this two countries have a strong economical relationship whereby they all engage in trade. Indians and Black people in South Africa were oppressed during apartheid in South Africa and this led to a merged force in order to overthrow the regime. Today India is enjoying its freedom and also its non-racial status.

Each and every year students at University of Limpopo(Turfloop Campus) celebrate spring day, on this day students pour each other with cold water and they just have fun and enjoy the sunny day. this fun start at around 7:00 in the morning but classes are not disrupted. students who are not attending in the morning gather at the main university gate( gate 2) with baskects full of water and pour those who enter the gate, everyone is poured even staffmembers including the Vice Chancellor Prof Mokgalong if he may try to use that gate. in the residents students also run around with basckets , it is a funny day, when i was a first year student(a.ka fresher) i did not enjoy this day, i still remember i was going to a 08:25 class and going to enter at gate 2 and guess what, they poured me with water and i went back to my room.i was very angry but i came back and join the fun. one thing i like about spring day is that it brings all student together and it is just a peaceful and happy day whereby student who never met join the fun and creates friendships and relationships. later at the university pound near Oscar Mpeta staduim there is a spring bash and local DJs are called to come and give the masses cool house music tunes until around 22:00 in the evening when students are tired. it is a very good day and this year is my final year here and i am gonna miss this funny day. but also what is important is that students must enjoy responsibly and avoid any injuries while enjoying themselves because several cases have been reported whereby some students got injured.

and lastly on this day students must just come together and forget about any other issues.

Any interpretations of the significance of Rastafari must begin wiht the understnding that it is a conscious attempt by the African soul to free itself from the alienating fatters of colonialism and its contemporary legacies(Edmonds;1998) in Murrel et al(1998). Ennis M. Edmonds have written a chapter in a Rastafari Book called Chanting Down Babylon by Murrel et al. the chapter called 'Dread "I" In-a-Babylon: Ideological resistance and Cultural Revitalization. he further point that to accopmlish this freedom, Rastas have unleashead an ideological assoult on the culture and institutions that have dominated the African diaspora since the seventeenth century. In Rastafari terms he says, this consicts of "beating down babylon". they have also embarked on an ambitious endevour of "stepin outa(out of) Babylon" to create an alternative culture that reflects a sense of thier African heritage.

Edmonds(1998) says Rastas may differ among themselves concerning many of htier importance beliefs, but all are in accord regarding the Babylonian nature of life in the African diospora, and all declare thier psychological and cultural rejection of the values and institutions of Babylon. That Rastas adopted the term Babylon from christian scriptures is not surprising. Babylon embodies the cultural ethos of the forces that worked against "the people of God", the hebrews. Edmonds goes further to say it is mentioned in eighteen books of the Bible and not only is portrayed in Relevations as the final earthly city but emitomizes everything that is evil and oppresive in the world. the Rastafarians's choice of the term Babylon as the symbolic designation of the forces thats eek to "downpress" abd dehumanize them is, in effect, an attenpt to neutrslize those forces.

in this chapter Edmonds also talkes about the most painful memory of Rastas, the Middle Passage- the experience on the slave ships from West Africa to the new world- and thier subsequent suffering in modern Babylon. the manner in which Rastas speaks of the MIddle Passage and the institutions of slavery reveals that they still bear the psychic scars of those experinces, according to Edmonds.

Hailing from Thohoyandou in Venda, vhoMokwevho as known by fans started singing a long time ago when he as a backing vocal for Chicco Thwala, he has been in music for almost three decades. many have mistaken his vioce with that one of Bob Marley. Colbert is a devoted Rastaman who was inspired by the works of Bob Marley and other reggae legends. Mokwevho who sings reggae in his mothertongue(Tshivenda) aims to send his powerful messages to the local people in Venda area and other regions in Limpopo. he also sings some of his songs in English. Colbert have released many reggae albums and he is/was also known as Harley and the Rasta Family(see picture). Mokwevho is known by singing about social issues which affect the local people who supports his music. almost all people in Limpopo recognise the role played by Colbert by his music, even people who don't speak Tshivenda also listen to his music and enjoy the message. As a devoted Rastafarian Mokwevho is of a same aim and objectives as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Joseph Hill and his music tries to unite peolpe and to promote peace. Mokwevho also aims to reach other reggae fans all over South Africa and he says his music is not only for people in Limpopo as the message is for all people. during her visit in South Africa Ritta Marley heard Colbert singing, and she said Colbert reminds her of his late husband Bob Marley. Colbert's music is getting air play in all SABC radio stations and the listeners are uplifted by his music. some critics argue that due to the fact that almosts his hits are in Tshivenda people who cannot hear him may not be interested, but many of our local reggae artists record in thier mothertounge( for example Senzo, Khakhathi, Ntshenge,Rasta Nkushu and others) and they get exposure. his massive hit 'ndotakala hani' created massive reggae vibes all over South Africa. Mokwevho is also a marvel to watch performing live on stage with his massive band, but he host many of his concerts in Venda, i think he must tour the country and also go abroad if possible. check out his albums at our nearest mucis outlet and buy, please peolpe don't buy pirated music, you are killing our artists!!!!, and also those who copy music on computer please stop that and go to shops and support your local artists!!!!! take actions agains piracy because you can!!!!!!. this information can be used but acknowledge the source(make reference)

Last December, the ANC held its 52nd National Conference in Polokwane. As prescribed by our Constitution, the Conference elected the National Executive Committee which will lead the ANC until the next elective National Conference in 2012.
As a result of our respect for the views of our members, both of us accepted nomination by the branches of the ANC for election to the position of President. The National Conference democratically elected one of us, Jacob Zuma, as President of the ANC.
Consistent with the democratic traditions of our movement, both of us readily accepted this outcome, as has happened throughout our history since 1912. To emphasise this ready acceptance, when the election results were announced, we walked together from the Conference floor to the Conference stage as part of the process of installing the new President.
We did this to acknowledge the announced election results, and thus symbolise the smooth and amicable passage of the Office of ANC President from Thabo Mbeki to Jacob Zuma, as well as the other election outcomes.
In his Closing Conference Address, the new President of the ANC, Jacob Zuma, emphasised the reality that both of us had worked together closely for three decades as friends, brothers and comrades, and remained friends, brothers and comrades, even as he assumed the position of President of the ANC.
Since then, five months ago, everything that has happened in terms of the private and public relations between ourselves, and the functioning of both the ANC and Government, has confirmed the message we sought to communicate publicly in Polokwane - that we remain the same comrades, united in our commitment to the ANC and its historic objectives, as we were before the 52nd ANC National Conference elected Jacob Zuma as President of the ANC.
During this period, both of us have nevertheless been alarmed by the persistent campaign to communicate a false message that we are at war with each other, as alleged leaders of two opposed factions.
As part of this, determined suggestions have been made that the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC), elected in Polokwane, would inevitably seek to remove from their positions some comrades the ANC had previously deployed in Government, including the President of the Republic.
At the same time, the idea has been strongly promoted that our Government, led by a person who had failed to secure election as President of the ANC, would inevitably act in a manner contrary to the wishes of the NEC elected at the Polokwane Conference.
This shameless speculation and negative campaign have provided a very convenient basis publicly to project the false view that the ANC is a movement at war with itself.
Thus an attempt has been made to entrench the perspective that our country is condemned to experience a terminal war between the ANC and our Government, despite that fact that the latter, in all three spheres, is nonetheless made up of loyal ANC cadres who unequivocally accept and respect all the outcomes of the 52nd ANC National Conference. This includes the unreserved acceptance of the fact by Thabo Mbeki, a member of the ANC, that Jacob Zuma is President of the ANC.
In the meantime, at the practical level, ANC members deployed in Government have interacted and continue to interact very regularly with the constitutional structures of their movement, the ANC, the ruling party.
At the national level, this started with the normal January (2008) ANC NEC Lekgotla, which, as has happened every year for a decade, considered and accepted the principal directions of the (2008) Government Programme of Action, as reflected in the State of the Nation Address and the 2008/9 Budget.
At the same time, the ANC NEC has made it very clear that the ANC is determined not to destabilise our system of governance. It has therefore resolutely opposed all demands that ANC members of Government in all spheres, including the President of the Republic, should be removed from office, simply because, post-Polokwane, they are not members of the ANC NEC, or are otherwise perceived as losers in the Polokwane election process.
Related to this, for many years, together with the rest of our leadership, we have emphasised that our movement encourages open debate within its ranks. Simultaneously, we have insisted that political differences thrown up by this democratic practice, as manifested in our ongoing internal organisational processes, including the Conferences of our regions, Provinces and Leagues, do not translate into organisational divisions.
Political differences demonstrated during these processes are therefore nothing more than a natural democratic expression of different views typical of any organisation as large and democratic as the ANC is.
At the same time, both of us will continue to insist that these different opinions should be expressed in a disciplined, tolerant and peaceful manner, focused on advancing our revolutionary democratic outlook, and consistent with the Constitution, normal practices and traditions of the ANC. We admit that, in some instances, we have failed to achieve this objective.
As underlined by this failure, we consider it as one of our major tasks constantly to educate all our members to understand that their freedom freely to advance different views does not, and must never communicate the unacceptable message that this means that they should thereby become enemies or irreconcilable adversaries. We cannot afford the shameful and violent disruptions of our democratic processes we have experienced at our conferences, which have brought our movement into public disrepute at home and broad.
Despite what we have said concerning our own conduct, it has been clear to us for some time that some people in our country have nevertheless found it in their interest to sustain the mischievous notion that the ANC is divided into two warring factions, which, allegedly, respectively, we lead. To us, it seems that some among these have found it personally profitable to sustain this dangerous fiction.
In its May 25, 2008 edition, City Press carried a front page article headed "Mbeki camp fights back". This headline and the related inaccurate report perpetuate exactly the entirely mistaken notion that the ANC is divided into two camps - a Mbeki and a Zuma camp.
As a country and a nation we confront a multitude of important, difficult and urgent challenges. We can only solve these if we open our eyes to the truth about the real state of the nation, resisting all temptation to succumb to false and partisan propositions and expectations.
In this context, we thank the Editor of City Press for giving us the possibility honestly to convey some fundamental truths we believe should inform the consciousness of our nation about its condition and its future, especially as these relate to the ANC.
The ANC is fully conscious of its historic responsibility to all our citizens, black and white, always to serve the people of South Africa. Both of us are therefore intensely aware of our obligation to educate all members of the ANC to understand that they, including ourselves, have a task always to address the aspirations of the masses, rather than our personal interests.
The ANC leaders elected at the Polokwane Conference understand and accept that others who might not have been elected into the ANC NEC nevertheless remain leaders of both our movement and people, and should be respected as such. Like all other genuine members of our movement, Jacob Zuma will therefore never pretend that Thabo Mbeki is not a leader of the ANC.
The 52nd Polokwane ANC National Conference unanimously adopted policy positions relating to the future of our country, with absolutely no regard to any differences that might have emerged about who should be elected into the ANC NEC.
These policy positions do not represent a qualitative break with the decisions adopted by the 2002 51st Stellenbosch National Conference. Rather, they constitute a further refinement informed by the collective practical experience the ANC and the rest of the progressive movement gathered in the period between the 51st and the 52nd ANC National Conferences, and before.
The current ANC Government was elected in 2004 on the basis of the acceptance by the national electorate of our 2004 Election Manifesto, which reflected the decisions of the 2002 ANC National Conference, and consequently the popular mandate of the Government elected in 2004.
Similarly, our 1999 Election Manifesto and the subsequent Government programme represented the policy decisions adopted at our 1997 50th Mafikeng National Conference, and served as the people's mandate for our 1999-2004 National Government.
The 2009 ANC Election Manifesto will be based, necessarily, on the positions adopted by the 2007 ANC National Conference, in the same way that the 2004 ANC Election Manifesto, which our current Government is implementing, was based on the decisions of the 2002 ANC National Conference.
Since 1994, when we openly informed the nation about our Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), the ANC has not implemented any Government programme that was hidden from the people. This has confirmed our firm adherence to the critically important democratic governance principles of transparency and accountability.
Accordingly, from 2009 onwards, as usual, the ANC will not implement any Government programme that had otherwise been hidden from the people. The policies we will pursue are reflected in the decisions we took at the 2007 52nd ANC Polokwane Conference, which we have published, taking into account the objective national and international conditions our country will face from 2009 onwards.
The ANC has no camps. It does not function as a double-headed monster. It has one common membership. It has one leadership. It has one policy. It has one Government. It leads one people, united in its diversity. It has no hidden tricks up its sleeve. It will contest the 2009 election as one united movement.
At the same time, it will continue openly to debate within its ranks, media and publicly the central and complex issues of what next we need to do to accelerate our advance towards the achievement of the goals of a better life for all our people and the renaissance of Africa, and the role of the ANC in this regard.
Neither we, nor the ANC, have any tricks up our sleeves. Together, acting within the policy framework democratically decided by our movement, the ANC, we will do everything we can to achieve the objectives the ANC has set itself at many conferences, including the 52nd National Conference. Between us and the nation, there can be no surprises.
In the interest of both the ANC and the nation, we will do everything possible to ensure that during this 96th year of the ANC, and the following years, including our 97th, in 2009, and Centenary, in 2012, the ANC remains a united and principled national movement determined to serve all the people of South Africa and Africa.
Both of us are acutely aware of our responsibility as leaders of the ANC and the people of our country, and will continue to act in a manner that respects this responsibility.
Neither one of us leads any ANC camp. Neither one of us represents any ANC faction. Neither one of us holds opposed policy positions. Neither one of us is involved in a struggle to build a personal support base in the ANC and the nation, which would divide both.
Neither are we involved in a contest about who, between us, will lead the Government our people will choose democratically in the 2009 General Elections. Both of us are committed to the unrelenting pursuit of the achievement of the goal of a better life for all our people and the renewal of our Continent, Africa.
There is no Zuma camp in the ANC. There is no Mbeki camp in the ANC. Nobody, including members of the ANC and the media, should use our names to pursue divisive goals that have nothing to do with the truth, and stand in direct opposition to the noble history, the real nature, and the historic objectives of the ANC, and our commitment to serve the people of South Africa.

Zimbabwe: China Declines to Join Anti-Zim Crusade

THE United States has failed to persuade China to join its anti-Zimbabwe crusade and impose United Nations sanctions against the country amid reports that the latter instead gave the thumbs-up to President Mugabe's overtures for talks between Zanu-PF and MDC-T.
United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice over the weekend tried to enlist the help of China, a fellow permanent member of the UN Security Council and close ally of Zimbabwe, to push through new sanctions on top of the illegal ones already imposed by the US and its allies.

Observers said Rice tried to get leverage by reminding Beijing of the assistance Washington extended after a recent earthquake in the Chinese province of Sichuan left nearly 70 000 people dead.
Instead, China thanked America for its help but gave the thumbs-up to President Mugabe's call for talks between his party and the opposition. Rice met with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, who both refused to be drawn into discussing Zimbabwe with the media.
After the meetings, China's Foreign Minister, Mr Yang Jiechi, said it was imperative to stabilise the situation in Zimbabwe and promote dialogue, not to continue with sanctions.
"The most pressing path is to stabilise the situation in Zimbabwe. We hope the parties concerned can engage in serious dialogue to find a proper solution."
The US has been trying to use its presidency of the Security Council -- which ends today -- to get the UN to condemn Zimbabwe and impose sanctions on the country, but these attempts have met with stiff resistance from China, South Africa, Russia and Indonesia, among other states. Both China and Russia have veto power in the council, which means they can block any recommendations by the rest of the UN organ. Just before last Friday's presidential run-off, won convincingly by President Mugabe, US, British and French attempts to unilaterally declare Morgan Tsvangirai president drew the ire of South Africa and China at the Security Council.

Mention the name Israel Vibration in reggae music circles and watch the warmth of recognition and appreciation of anyone who has seen or heard this very special group of singers. The positive vibrations emanating from the music of Israel Vibration have been spellbinding audiences, critics and DJs for over two decades. This group of singers casts a harmonious musical spell, weaving traditional roots reggae with a mesmerizing sound and deeply spiritual message.

Israel Vibration members Cecil Spence (Skelly) and Lascelle Bulgin (Wiss) were born in Jamaica, West Indies. Each is a victim of Poliomyelitis (Polio). They met as children in the Mona Rehabilitation Center,into which they were placed because of their families’ limited resources and their needs for specializedmedical care. They learned early on the necessity for developing survival skills, and although polio is anundeniably crippling and debilitating disease, the youths never let their physically challenging situationsupercede their willpower and their creative abilities. They found strength in the faith of Rastafarithrough the guidance of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, and begancomposing and singing songs which expressed their spiritual beliefs.
Their spirituality and stance on issues relating to their residency at the Mona Rehabilitation Centercaused them to be expelled from that institution. Undaunted, they found solace, comfort, andsustenance in their music, which won them the support of their local community and provided them withencouragement to pursue their music careers. They began recording in 1976, enjoying a hit with thepoignant Same Song, which was licensed to EMI and brought the group international attention. Theirmusical careers seemed to be taking off, but, like many Jamaican artists, Israel Vibration’s recordingcareer was set back by a local industry plagued at that time by questionable accounting practices,musical piracy, and a lack of tour support. In 1983, the group broke up and its members moved to theStates both for superior medical care and to pursue solo projects.
In 1988, each of the members approached Doctor Dread, president and founder of RAS Records, aboutsolo recordings. Dr. Dread, who had greatly admired Israel Vibration’s unique, resonating sound, tookheed from the words of Marcus Garvey, and, telling them that "unity is strength," recommended that themembers unite. They accepted, and the rest of the story is one of a beautiful relationship that beganwith Strength of My Life, and continued with Praises, Forever, Vibes Alive, IV, On The Rock, Free toMove, and several dub albums. On the Rock garnered much praise the single and video "RudeboyShufflin’," which, along with the "Feeling Irie" video, has been aired on BET as well as other televisionprograms throughout the US and abroad. On The Rock and its follow-up Free To Move reached theirheight of success upon reaching number one on the CMJ New World charts. Their 1999 release, Paythe Piper, displays some of the strong material songwriters Skelly and Wiss are known for, and thealbum's featured video "Hard Road" was seen in 3900 Blockbuster video stores during the month ofJanuary, 2000.
Always associated with the Roots Radics, strengthened by SLY DUNBAR, Israel Vibration offers us anew jewel after almost 5 years of sound recording absence, with STAMINA in 2007.
Their lyrics are always consciousness, sticking perfectly on the rythmic roots section of the Radicsdecorated with the feminine choirs which accompanied Burning Spear in the 90s.

INTERVIEW ISRAEL VIBRATION AB 04/2005
Israel Vibration still has the reputation to be one of the strongest forces in Jamaican vocal harmony style. Wiss, Skelly and Apple - the three polio victims that met when staying at the Mona rehabilitation centre - represent roots reggae at its best. Though Apple decided, for personal reasons, to leave the trio a couple of years ago, Wiss and Skelly are still keeping the torch burning. They remain regulars at the Belgian AB, stopping by at least once a year. Nonetheless their fans don't seem to suffer from overexposure as their concerts keep selling out and time after time end with an ecstatic crowd screaming for more.
Wiss and Skelly are not really known as being very talkative but we managed to persuade them to do a short interview anyway:
Wiss, to start off with an easy question: What did you think of these Belgian vibes here tonight?Wiss: "The vibes were nice and strong, good vibes from the people. I really appreciate it!"Let's go back in history. You guys met for the first time whilst staying at the Mona Rehabilitation Centre, that is well known, but then you got separated again and only by accident met each other again later on. Or should we see more into that meeting?Wiss: "I wouldn't really call it 'by accident', that was supposed to take place! That's how I look upon it.We also know the story that has been told many times, of how, after your first recordings, you guys got ripped of by Tommy Cowan. We don't need to repeat the whole story here, but my question is: What would you tell young singers and musicians that are just starting out in the music business, to prevent them from falling in the same trap?Wiss: "I would say that if they find themselves in a position where they can do some of the work themselves, they should definitely look in that direction. If they do have to depend on someone, they should secure their part of the deal from the beginning. That's your security. Just look out and be careful!"I don't know if it's still the case now, but there was a period when of every Israel Vibration album that was released a dub version soon followed. What was the reason for doing that?Wiss: "Well, that's just a part of Jamaican culture you know. When you bring out a track, the riddim version is also quite appreciated."For the longest time you've been working together with the Roots Radics now. I guess they must almost be like a second family, but don't you ever feel like touring or recording with another band?Wiss: "In the early days we didn't work with just one set of musicians, but when we started to work with R.A.S. records, they had an agreement with the Roots Radics, so they became our recording band. It's not like we really can't work with other bands, but this really flows, so why not let it flow?"There also seem to be very few duets between Israel Vibration and other singers or deejays. Personally I only know of one on the 'Serious Matter' album of U Roy. Why haven't you done that more often?Skelly: "We did one with Brigadier Jerry too, but we might do some more in the future."A question for you then Skelly: You used to be a very talented basketball player but got kicked of the team because of your Rastafarian belief. What feelings did that stir for you? I imagine this would have been one of the first times where you were confronted with a direct aversion to Rastafarianism.Skelly: "Like they always say: "When one door is closed another will open!". I was planning to play basketball for Rastafari, but the Most High gave me something to do that I really even loved more: playing music with the people I love! So I don't regret it! Selassie I!"As a last question, something more spiritual: Just recently the Prophet Gad, founder of the Twelve Tribes of Israel passed away. Did you know him personally and what kind of man was he to you?Wiss: "I knew him yes. He was a man that had certain insights, who brought certain realisations to the people and from that a lot of good things sprouted. Rastafari!"Rastafari!

Court bid to block PAC national conference

MEMBERS of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) have hauled their president, Letlapa Mphahlele, to court in a bid to prevent him from convening the party’s national conference.
The conference is scheduled for Alice in the Eastern Cape from July 4 to 6.
Mthatha branch members Pasika Nontshiza and Koliswa Mbete filed an urgent court application in the Pretoria High Court last week to stall the conference, saying the party was dysfunctional.
Among the demands in their application was that the party’s constitution and national executive committee be reinstated. They also demanded that Mphahlele fully reinstate suspended finance secretary Chargin Mabaso.
They said they had been mandated by members of the PAC nationally after holding several consultative meetings across the country.
Mphahlele suspended the party’s constitution after dissolving the PAC national executive committee and began ruling by decree in September. He justified his action by saying there was a crisis in the party .
His actions were not well received by some members who have been with the party for more than three decades.
The PAC’s youth wing, the Pan Africanist Youth Congress of Azania, accused Mphahlele of destroying the party and called on him to step down.
Nontshiza told City Press this week that the party had first tried to resolve the dispute internally.
“Letters were written to him. We even requested former PAC presidents Clarence Makwetu and Motsoko Pheko to meet and reason with him but nothing came of it,” said Nontshiza.
He said party members from seven provinces met two weeks ago in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, where they decided to challenge their president’s “unconstitutional” leadership in court.
In his answering affidavit, Mphahlele said Mabaso had only been redeployed, not suspended.
“I dispute the statement that I acted unilaterally in suspending the constitution of the PAC,” he said.
He quoted the party’s disciplinary code, which reads: “The president shall have emergency powers, which he may delegate to suspend the entire constitution of the PAC so as to ensure that the movement emerges intact through a crisis.
“At the time [that the constitution has been suspended], he directs the movement by decree and is answerable for his action to the national conference or national congress.”
Mphahlele said Nontshiza and Mbete had no right to file the court application and that the conference should go ahead so that new leaders could be elected.
‘‘They have not renewed their membership for 2008. There is no organisation with a lifetime membership,” he said. “The PAC is not an exception, therefore they are not eligible to take any decision about the future of the PAC.”
Monde Mchitheka, a national executive committee member based in East London, confirmed that Mphahlele’s actions had been discussed in meetings.
“I know that Nontshiza and Mbete are acting on behalf of some party members,” he said.
Mphahlele’s spokesperson, Mudina Maivha, said he would only comment after the court case and cautioned members to stop undermining the organisation’s leaders who, he said, had been duly elected.

Reggae music is what took Rastafari to the world and Rastafari took Reggae music to the world. Bob Marley and the Wailers were the vehicle to take Reggae music and Rastafari to the world. Today Rastafarian's most popular symbol is Bob Marley, who died of cancer in 1981 at age 36. His influence on the music is still strong and many members of his family are now reggae artists themselves. He is known as the King of Reggae.
Formed in the late 1960's the group was known as the Wailing Rude Bwoys. The original members were Bob Marley, Junior Brathwaite, Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston. The band gained popularity in the early 1970's and then broke up. Bob Marley changed the name to Bob Marley and the Wailers. The Bob Marley "syndrome" caught afire in Jamaica. The popularity of Bob Marley brought many imitators and changed the face of music in Jamaica. Musicians looking for Bob Marley type popularity, grew dreadlocks and started professing Rastafari. The lyrics of many songs were changed and sprinkled with references to Rastafari . It was how Reggae was seen by the world and so the musicians obliged.

These musicans automatically grew dreadlocks, called on the name "JAH" "Haile Selassie" and "Rasta". They professed Rastafari as a way to gain popularity and the perceived benefits. Many wanted to "piggyback" on the foundation laid by Bob Marley and use it as religious justification for smoking the ganja (Marijuana).
